Hyundai Targets 2028 Atlas Deployment As It Builds Robotics Business
The automaker says it is moving beyond vehicle manufacturing into robot production, distribution, and financing, with Boston Dynamics’ Atlas planned for factory use from 2028.

Hyundai Motor Company is accelerating its push into robotics and is positioning itself as a 'Physical AI' company. The company is scaling robotics as a new business alongside its automotive operations.
The plans were outlined at Hyundai’s Aug. 26, 2026, CEO Investor Day, where President and CEO José Muñoz announced that they will produce and deploy robots and robotaxis.
“Let me give some dimensions on our opportunity to scale and deploy our robotics business. Boston Dynamics is now part of Hyundai Motor Group. We're building Spot and Stretch robots, and soon, we'll be mass-producing Atlas humanoid robots. We have an existing potential distribution for selling robots through our dealer partners. And Hyundai Capital is exploring the feasibility of financing sales of robots. Development, production, distribution, sales, and finance for robotics. This is the power of the Group!,”said CEO Muñoz.
The company said the development of manufacturing AI robotics with Boston Dynamics is accelerating toward commercialisation. The company’s Robot Metaplant Application Center in the United States is expected to further expand by the end of 2026. The facility is designed to simulate factory environments, train robots, collect real-world data, and test systems before they reach production lines.
Hyundai, which acquired a majority stake in Boston Dynamics earlier this year, also announced their Atlas humanoids will be deployed at their Metaplant in 2028. In an earlier statement, the company had announced ‘parts sequencing’ as an initial application within the plant, along with component assembly targeted for 2030.
Muñoz also stated that the group’s existing distribution channels will be used for selling robots through dealer partners, while Hyundai Capital is exploring the feasibility of financing robot sales. The investor-day release described the planned chain as covering robotics development, production, distribution, sales, and finance.
