Shift Robotics Expands Moonwalkers With $1,199 Dusk Shoes
The latest robotic footwear from Shift weighs as little as 1.6 kg per shoe and incorporates a gait model that adapts assistance to the wearer's movements.
AUSTIN, Texas — Shift Robotics has launched Moonwalkers Dusk, a $1,199 version of its motorized footwear that cuts weight and adds new gait-control features as the company pushes its robotic shoes toward a broader consumer market.
The Austin-based company lists Dusk for sale in three sizes and three colors. Dusk is available in three sizes and three colors; shipping of the initial 200-pair run is due to start Oct. 12.
The smallest version weighs 1.6 kg (3.5 pounds) per shoe, which Shift says is about one-third lighter than the original Moonwalkers and 20% lighter than its Aero model. Medium and large versions weigh 1.73 kg and 1.95 kg per shoe, respectively. All three models reach a top speed of 7 mph (11.3 kph).
Dusk's SENSA gait model distinguishes walking, running and jumping, detects slope, and learns a user's stride within ten steps. Those performance claims come from the manufacturer and have not been independently verified.
The footwear also features three fitted size ranges from U.S. men's sizes 4 to 13 and women's sizes 5 through 14. Unlike earlier Moonwalkers, Dusk uses a two-dimensional flexible hinge that moves with the rolling motion of the foot. Gesture controls allow wearers to switch between indoor and assisted modes without using a phone.
A redesigned Shift app, scheduled for release in late October, will provide measurements for five gait metrics, including propulsion efficiency, push-off power, force symmetry, and step-timing rhythm. Shift describes the combination of its gait model and motorized footwear as “physical AI,” an adaptive control system that responds to wearer movement.
The company claims a 90-minute charging time, IP54 protection against dust and water splashes and a maximum user weight of about 100 kg. It also says straps, exterior plastics and wheel rims can be replaced.
Shift has not disclosed how many Dusk units it expects to sell beyond the initial 200-pair batch or provided independent testing of its adaptive-control and performance claims.
